Many persons are affected by skin growths on their body. Most commonly these are benign (non-cancerous) moles, skin tags or warts.

Warts are caused by the Human Papilloma virus and is transmitted by direct contact with another person carrying the wart virus. The virus causes the rapid growth of cells on the outer layers of the skin. They are extremely common, especially in small children.

Skin tags are small, floppy, and skin-colored growths, which stick out from the skin. It may be larger at the top than at the base. They can appear with age or as a result of obesity, diabetes and pregnancy.

Moles can be flesh-colored, brown, red, pink, blue, or black. These round, flat or slightly raised growths can appear anywhere on the body. Moles should look the same from month to month and appear somewhat uniform in color.

Many other benign skin growths are mistakenly referred to as ‘moles’. Fortunately, many common skin growths do not need treatment. Some people may still wish to remove them however, because they are cosmetically bothersome or have become irritated and inflamed. Dermatologists can remove most growths during an office visit. Most skin growths can be removed by excision (cutting), cryosurgery (freezing), curettage (scraping) or electrosurgery (burning).
